What “wall hugger” actually means
It’s a geometry difference, not a marketing word. On a standard adjustable base, the pivot point sits under the mattress, so raising the head swings the upper body forward and the sleeper travels away from the wall — often 15 to 20 centimetres by the time the head is fully up. A wall-hugger mechanism moves the whole upper section back along the frame at the same time as it lifts, cancelling most of that drift. In a bedroom where the bed sits against a wall with a table beside it — which is most bedrooms — that’s the difference between reaching for your book and getting back out of bed to fetch it.
The split versions answer a different problem: two people rarely want the same position. Split Queen and split King are built as two separate halves under one bed, each with its own motor and handset, so one side can sit up and read while the other stays flat.

- Ask whether your mattress is suited to an adjustable base. Many standard mattresses are not built to flex, and putting the wrong one on an adjustable base can damage it.
- Ask what the base weighs and how it arrives — adjustable bases are heavy and usually come in more than one carton.
- Check the power requirements and where the lead needs to reach.
- For split configurations, ask for each half’s dimensions so you can plan the room and the bedding.
- Ask about weight capacity for your situation, and confirm delivery, assembly and removal options for your area.
