The Virtue is an adjustable base sold on its own. The head and the foot both raise from a handset, so you can sit up to read or watch television and put your legs up without building a tower of pillows behind you. Because this is the base rather than a whole bed, one question matters more than any other before you buy: whether the mattress you already own will bend with it.

Will Your Mattress Work on It?
This is the question that catches people out, and it is worth two minutes before anything else. A base that bends needs a mattress that bends with it. Pocket spring and foam mattresses generally do, because the springs are individually pocketed or there are no springs at all, so the surface follows the curve. A traditional continuous-coil mattress generally does not — the coils are linked across the whole mattress, so it resists the shape instead of taking it. Thickness plays a part too: a very deep mattress flattens the curve and you lose some of the movement you paid for. The second thing worth knowing is what an adjustable base does not do. It changes the shape of the sleeping surface, not its height. If the difficulty is getting into and out of bed rather than being comfortable once you are in it, a Hi-Lo bed is the one to look at instead — those raise and lower the whole bed. Plenty of people arrive asking for one and leave with the other, and we would rather sort that out in the showroom than after delivery.

Before You Buy

Tell us what mattress you have. Bring the label, or a photo of it. This is the one thing that decides whether the base will work for you, and we would rather check it now than have you find out at home.

Ask which sizes we can get. Not every size is held at every store, and base-only sizing needs to match the mattress you already own.

Ask us the maximum user weight. We will not print a figure we have not confirmed — ask in store and we will get it for you in writing.

Check where the power point is. An adjustable base needs one within reach of the bed, and it is easier to work that out before delivery than after.

Ask what else the base does. Some adjustable bases add massage, a USB point or an under-bed light, and some do not. Ask about this one specifically rather than assuming.

Ask about delivery and the old base. These are heavy, two-person items. Check doorway widths and stairs, and ask whether we can take your existing base away.

Sharing a bed? Ask us about split configurations, where each side moves on its own. It is a different purchase and worth understanding before you commit to a single base.
