The iLift Hilo 500 is a Hi-Lo adjustable bed base that moves in more ways than any other bed we stock. As well as raising and lowering the whole bed and adjusting the head and foot, it tilts into Trendelenburg and cardiac chair positions, carries an additional motor for lumbar support, and has massage and an LED light built in. The mattress and headboard are chosen separately.

What each movement does
The Hi-Lo function raises and lowers the whole bed, so the edge can be set at a height that makes standing up a shorter movement, and lowered again afterwards. Head and foot adjust independently for sitting up or raising the legs. The tilt positions move the surface as a whole rather than folding it: Trendelenburg tips the bed so the head sits lower than the feet, and reverses it the other way, while the cardiac chair position brings the base toward an upright seated shape. The extra lumbar motor adds movement through the lower back section rather than leaving it as one flat panel.
That range is the reason to choose the 500 over a simpler bed, and it is also the reason to see it demonstrated. Positions like these are chosen for particular circumstances, and the sensible order is to work out what is actually needed first — with whoever is advising on care, if there is someone — and then to match the bed to it. One choice worth understanding before you order is the split configuration. A split base is two independent halves under one bed: each side raises and lowers on its own handset, so one person can sit up to read while the other stays flat. A Split Queen is made up of two halves 77 cm wide, and a Split King is two long singles side by side — which means each half takes its own mattress, and the pair is made up as one bed on top. If only one person needs the movement, a standard size costs less and does the job; if both do, a split is the reason people stop arguing about the handset.

- Ask for the lowest and highest bed heights, and the weight the base is rated to carry — both matter, and both should be confirmed in writing rather than assumed.
- Ask which mattresses suit a base that bends, tilts and lifts, since not every mattress will.
