What the Hi-Lo function actually does
An ordinary adjustable bed changes the shape of the sleeping surface. A Hi-Lo bed changes its height as well, and that single difference is why people choose one. Sitting on the edge of a bed set at the right height makes standing up a shorter, steadier movement, and lowering the bed afterwards puts the sleeping surface closer to the floor. If someone helps at the bedside, raising the bed brings the work up to their level rather than asking them to bend to it — which is the reason height-adjustable beds have been standard in care settings for decades and are now common in homes.
The choice between wheels and feet is worth thinking through before ordering. Wheels let the bed be moved for cleaning or to get access from both sides, and they usually lock; feet keep the bed where it is put. Whichever you choose, the bed still needs clear space around it to move through its full height range, and a power point within reach of the cable.
One choice worth understanding before you order is the split configuration. A split base is two independent halves under one bed: each side raises and lowers on its own handset, so one person can sit up to read while the other stays flat. A Split Queen is made up of two halves 77 cm wide, and a Split King is two long singles side by side — which means each half takes its own mattress, and the pair is made up as one bed on top. If only one person needs the movement, a standard size costs less and does the job; if both do, a split is the reason people stop arguing about the handset.
