How to Know Whether You Are Actually a Standard
Most people assume they are the standard size and most people are right, but the ones who are wrong tend to find out late. There are three checks and they take a minute between them. Sit all the way back: your feet should rest flat on the floor, not dangle and not brace. Run two fingers behind your knee: there should be a gap rather than pressure, because a seat that is too deep presses on the back of the leg and slowly becomes the reason you stop using the chair. Then let your arms drop: your elbows should land on the armrests without reaching down or hunching up, because the arms are what you push against to stand.
If two of the three feel right and one is off, you are between sizes, and that is common. The useful thing to know is what actually changes between them here: the XL runs 5 cm higher at the seat and 5 cm higher at the backrest, and 6 cm wider overall. So if your complaint is that chairs end too soon at the shoulder, or that your knees sit above your hips, the answer is a size up rather than more padding. If the checks all pass and the chair simply feels roomy, you are in the right one. Tell us which check felt wrong and we will point you at the size that fixes it.

Before You Buy

Run the three checks. Feet flat on the floor, two fingers of clearance behind the knee, elbows landing naturally on the arms. If one is off, say which — that tells us which way to move you.

Ask us the maximum user weight for the Standard. It carries its own rating, and it is not the 250 kg quoted on the XL. We will give you the Standard’s own figure rather than let the higher number travel.

Ask us the seat width, depth and height. We hold them for each Hester size and would rather give you the number than have you judge by eye.

Measure your doorway before delivery. It arrives boxed at 84 cm across, and it is a two-person item. Check hallway turns and stairs as well.

Allow for the recline. The chair stands 89 cm wide and 90 cm deep and opens to flat — ask how much clearance it needs behind it before you choose a wall.

Ask us how the fabric cleans. A chair that gets used every day gets marked, and knowing what you can and cannot put on a viscose blend is worth two minutes before you buy rather than after the first spill.
