What a Weight Rating Actually Covers — and Why Height Matters Too
A capacity figure is not a badge bolted onto an ordinary chair. When a lift chair is rated to 250 kg the frame is reinforced and the lift mechanism is heavier, and the seat is widened to sit over that structure. Two things are worth knowing about the number itself. A printed rating describes a load sitting still, while real use is someone shifting forward, rising with a push, and doing it several times a day — so buying comfortably inside a rating is a different purchase from buying at the ceiling of it. And the leg rest often carries its own separate and much lower limit than the chair as a whole, which is worth asking about specifically rather than assuming the headline figure covers every part.
The height is the part that gets overlooked. Most heavy-duty chairs solve width and stop there, which leaves a tall person with their knees above their hips and a backrest that finishes below the shoulders. The XL adds 5 cm at the seat and 5 cm at the backrest and extends the leg rest, so the proportions grow in three directions rather than one. If you are tall and have been sitting in chairs that end too soon, that is the difference you will feel first — before the capacity ever comes into it.

Tell us the actual weight the chair needs to carry. Not an estimate. Sitting comfortably inside a rating and sitting at the top of it are different purchases, and we will say so.

Ask what the leg rest is rated to on its own. On many lift chairs it carries a separate and much lower limit than the chair as a whole.

Ask us the overall height. The seat and backrest run 5 cm above the Standard, and we will give you the finished figures rather than have you work them out.

Measure your doorway before delivery. It arrives boxed at 90 cm across, and it is a two-person item with a steel lift mechanism inside. Check hallway turns and stairs too.

Allow for the recline. The chair stands 95 cm wide and 90 cm deep, and it opens to flat — ask us how much clearance it needs behind it before you choose a wall.
