Western Australian marri — a bed built from a south-west hardwood
The Bunbury is built from marri, the honey-toned hardwood of Western Australia's south-west — the same corner of the state the bed takes its name from. It uses solid marri together with veneered panels, a common way to build a large timber bed: solid where the frame does the work, panels where a wide flat face is needed. Marri is known for the dark gum veins running through its honey-blond grain, so no two frames come out looking the same.

Why marri is worth choosing
Marri (Corymbia calophylla) grows through the jarrah and karri forests of the south-west, and its name traces back to a Noongar word linked to the tree's deep-red gum. That gum is the timber's signature: it settles into dark veins through the honey-blond grain, and rather than being treated as a flaw to sand out of sight, it is the reason people choose marri. A King or Queen bed in a timber most of the country never sees, from the region it grew in.
Marri is also a dense, hard timber — the sort of weight you can feel when you move the frame, and a surface that takes years of real use.
