A base that bends needs a mattress that bends with it. Pocket spring and foam mattresses generally do, because the springs are individually pocketed or there are no springs at all, so the surface follows the curve. A traditional continuous-coil mattress generally does not — the coils are linked across the whole mattress, so it resists the shape instead of taking it. Thickness plays a part too: a very deep mattress flattens the curve and you lose some of the movement you paid for. It changes the shape of the sleeping surface, not its height.
